The food — Burnham Market and the surrounding villages have an exceptionally good food scene for a rural area. The Hoste in Burnham Market is an institution. Cookie's Crab Shop in Salthouse is the kind of place you drive specifically for. The fish and chips in Wells are genuinely excellent.
Practical Things Worth Knowing
Dogs: Norfolk is one of the most dog-friendly destinations in England. Most beaches allow dogs, many restaurants and pubs welcome them, and self-catering properties that accept dogs are plentiful. If your holiday decision hinges on the dog coming too, Norfolk should be near the top of your list.
Getting there: Norfolk is not the easiest drive from most of the UK — the road network in the county is largely single carriageway and journey times can be longer than the distance suggests. From London, allow two and a half to three hours minimum. Worth knowing before you leave with three children and a dog.
Shops: Burnham Market has everything you need for day-to-day supplies, including a brilliant deli and farm shop. The nearest large supermarket is in Fakenham, about fifteen minutes away. Stock up on arrival.
Weather: Book July and August for the best chance of good weather. Manage expectations accordingly. Pack for all eventualities, and you will not be disappointed.
